According to WFSB, police stopped the 30-year-old Democrat on Gold Star Highway at 2 a.m. Sunday, March 2. Bumgardner said he was trying to get his intoxicated wife home after hitting something on the highway, then failed three sobriety tests.
Bumgardner reportedly blew 1.822% and 1.722%, both more than twice the legal limit of .08%, the outlet says. Bodycam footage obtained by CT Insider shows Bumgardner failing field sobriety tests.
Daily Voice has reached out to police for details.
"I am disappointed and disheartened after hearing of Rep. Bumgardner’s arrest for driving under the influence. Rep. Bumgardner will be suspended from all committee and leadership assignments until further notice," Speaker of the House Matt Ritter said.
Bumgardner is serving his second non-consecutive term representing Groton and Stonington in the 41st House District.
Elected at age 20 in 2014, he became the youngest state representative in Connecticut history and has since served on the Groton Town Council and various legislative committees.
His website says he focuses on supporting small businesses, tackling climate change, and cutting taxes for working families, while also serving as Assistant Majority Leader and secretary of the Black and Puerto Rican Caucus. Bumgardner represents Groton and Stonington in the General Assembly.
